Two billion dollar zippo
Sixty years after the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, it is still commonly thought to have been the main reason for Japan's surrender, saving many lives and bringing an end to the second world war. Not so, says Murray Sayle in The Myth of Hiroshima. He says they surrended because they heard that the Soviets were entering the Pacific war and feared a division of Japan like the allies were doing to Germany. He outlined his views to Fran Kelly on ABC's Breakfast.
