Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the New Zealand-born 94-year-old, was the longest-serving premier of Queensland, from 1968-87. During his time he established a virtual police state, attacked unions, gays and feminists and supported the apartheid regime in South Africa. He was also against World Heritage listings and demolished the historic Bellevue Hotel in Brisbane.
